Marz Community Brewing Co.: brewing up a community of the future
// By Jacqueline Brennan
According to The Hop Review, “For many Chicagoans familiar with the city’s indie arts and culture scene, indie publication scene, bar and dining scene, craft beer scene—or just the neighborhood of Bridgeport in general—it’s likely they’ve heard of Ed Marszewski. Simply put, the co-founder of Marz Community Brewing Co. has his hand in a lot of projects, and to name them all would take its own feature…”
Marz Community Brewing Co., an Upswell Community Dinner site, is “where everyone gets together—the beer nerds, weirdos, cholos, your uncle Steve and friends we’ve yet to meet.” Marz is located on Chicago’s South Side in Bridgeport, among the city’s most diverse neighborhoods—with a thriving art community, a wide variety of restaurant offerings, and an “adjacency” claim as home of the Chicago White Sox, among Major League Baseball’s oldest franchises.
According to their website, “We created Marz as a platform for ongoing experimental collaboration—in the beers we were brewing and with the culture of the city as well.”
Ed Marszewski became a craft beer maker and entrepreneur after years of pursuing various creative endeavors. The Marz Community Taproom and Kitchen is the latest of his family’s Chicagoland endeavors—which also include Maria’s Packaged Goods & Community Bar (named for his mom) and Kimski (a Polish-Korean restaurant named in recognition of the heritage of Ed and his brother Mike).
For Ed, community is always top of mind, apparent in his oft-proclaimed tagline, “Community is the future.”
“We feel that by contributing more manufacturing and hospitality gigs in the hood that we can help build a better quality of life for those of us that live and work here in the city,” Marszewski has written. “We also want to give people another reason to come to our part of the city.”
